Psychological Safety

AFS Group - Fostering a Culture of Psychological Safety

Psychological safety is increasingly recognised as a critical component of a healthy, high-performing workplace.

At AFS Group, we provide expert advisory services that help organisations create environments where employees feel safe to speak up, share ideas, and express concerns without fear of retaliation.

Ensuring psychological safety is not only essential for mental well-being but also for driving innovation, collaboration, and overall organisational success.

Why Psychological Safety Matters

Psychological safety refers to an individual’s perception that they can take risks, make mistakes, or offer feedback without fear of negative consequences. A psychologically safe workplace fosters open communication, trust, and respect, which are essential for mental health, employee engagement, and long-term organisational resilience.

The Benefits of a Psychological Safe Workplace

Enhanced Team Collaboration When employees feel safe to voice their opinions and ideas, teams work more effectively and creatively.
Reduced Stress and Anxiety A psychologically safe workplace helps reduce work-related stress and mental health issues.
Increased Innovation When employees know they can experiment and share new ideas without fear of failure, organisations benefit from more innovative solutions.
Higher Employee Engagement and Retention Employees who feel valued and safe are more likely to stay with their organisation and be more productive.

"Nikolas was the best first-aid trainer I have come across. The training was informative and practical and even though I do first aid training in some form each year, I have never found other sessions as beneficial as today's session. It wasn't drawn out, I came away with more knowledge and more confidence in my skills than from previous training sessions."

"Krystal was fantastic, spoke very well, had a great personality and really good energy. Most courses are very dry and boring, I feel she went above the call of duty to deliver a great experience. The facility was very nice and it was also great it being north of the river. "

"Really appreciated the further depth that Nicholas was able to clarify about common misconceptions and further understanding of the biological relationships affected by Cadiac Arrest, Heart Attacks, Hypovolaemia, and various outcomes of shock.

Incredibly astute Teacher."

"Nick P is awesome. Have done many trainings and have never picked up and learnt so much as I did over the two days. I was dreading it to be honest, I have raved about it since to others.

Nick is clear, concise, respectful, down to earth and educated. Not all trainers or teachers can hit the nail on head like he did!"

How long is my First aid valid for?

Your nationally accredited first aid certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of completion.

It is important to note: You do need to recertify your CPR every year to remain compliant.

If I can't find my certificate how do I get another copy?

If you have attended training with AFS Group previously we can send you another copy of your certificate.

Simply email training@afsgroup.net.au with the course you did from the email address you would have registered for the course with.

What is a USI and why do I need one?

A Unique Student Identifier is a number allocated to a person when they register at www.usi.gov.au.

It will have 10 random characters and you will need that number to register for any training.

Be careful to futureproof this number by using an email address that will remain yours for a lifetime.

Who is Responsible for WHS?

No matter what industry you’re in or what type of business you’re running, everyone within the workplace is responsible for workplace health and safety. SafeWork Australia categorises people working within a business as:

  • The Person Conducting Business or Undertaking (PCBU)
  • Officers
  • Workers
  • Other persons at the workplace

According to Safework Australia, everyone in the above list has a varying degree of responsibility for the safety of its workplace and its employees.

What Can an Employer Do to Prove WHS Compliance?

The best thing you can do as an employer to prove WHS compliance is to ensure all employees are receiving and understanding regular training. It is important that you keep up to date and in-depth training records on the training that has been completed.

A good programme will include business and safety inductions. These should be run regularly and refreshed on a scheduled basis. At minimum once per year. This will help ensure that you are doing all that you can for your employees to know and understand what their safety responsibilities are and how to keep themselves and others within the workplace safe.

It’s important that as an employer you ensure your safety training has an assessment that proves your employee’s ongoing knowledge and competence. It should also highlight areas for improvement for each individual employee. These assessments then need to be documented and attached to an employee’s training records.
